A few days ago I received a wonderful New Year gift in the post from my very talented friend Yoko – one of her minutely detailed and exquisitely coloured copperplate etchings, entitled ‘guardian dragon’ (in celebration of 2012, the year of the Dragon).

‘guardian dragon’ by Yoko Hayashi

We’re very honoured to have such a handsome creature watching over us in 2012 – thank you, Yoko!

You can find more of Yoko’s beautiful work on her blog or her Flickr photostream – if you’re in need of a bit of magic do go and have a look.

While on the subject of prints (and dragons), I am close to completing a new series of little screenprints (with the working title “an amateur naturalist’s specimen collection”). The series consists of eight specimens (each in an edition of 13), and some of the critters include hand-coloured details (which has been a time-consuming, but satisfyingly obsessive, process ;). Here is one of them, simply entitled ‘larva’ – he started out life as some sort of crustacean larva, but now that I know 2012 is the year of the Dragon I like to imagine that he might be a very young dragon…

The middle of the week has come around again (how did that happen?!) and the weekend already feels like a distant memory… so I thought I’d post some work-in-progress shots of my weekend’s papercutting play before another busy work week swallows the memory (and impetus) altogether!

meditative inking…

… and cutting

I become so engrossed in the cutting that the rest of the world seems to melt away, and then occasionally I’ll get a creepy feeling, like I’m being watched…

… but apparently not with much interest!

Can’t wait to get stuck back in to this project, but for now there’s a big ol’ pile of client work demanding my attention – that Flash animation isn’t going to build itself…

Remember these critters? Well, way back at the beginning of this year I spent a couple of days at the wonderful Amsterdams Grafisch Atelier (AGA) and made a limited edition screenprint of them. After a nine month gestation period (I’m not sure what they’ve been up to for the past nine months in the dark seclusion of their A1 storage box!) they have finally found their way into the world, and more specifically in to my brand-spanking-new etsy shop.

Also available in the shop are little packs of handmade ‘Greeting Cards from a Cabinet of Curiosities’… for when flowers just won’t do, and the only way to say it is with creatures preserved in bottles :)

The AGA is a fully equipped printmaking studio in the centre of Amsterdam, which I am very happy to have found and very grateful to have access to since completing a screenprinting course/workshop there towards the end of last year. The workshop was very informative and a lot of fun, and the studio spaces are fantastic! These two ‘Curiosity Cabinet’ projects are the only things I have printed there since completing the workshop so I am very much hoping to get back to the AGA soon for more printing fun and experimentation… it has been too long!
