With the drawing, printing and hand-colouring finally complete, these little (each one is ±9x9cm), colourful specimen screenprints are now available in my shop >

I was glad to use this project as an opportunity to play with lots of colour, but while I was at it I couldn’t resist pulling a few clean, black-only prints. I do love the clarity and simplicity of a velvety black screenprint! These are also now available in my shop >

And I love the cobweb-on-a-frosty-morning quality that white ink on a darker background has, so I made a few variations in white on coloured pastel paper. These aren’t currently available in my shop, but if you’re in Amsterdam you can pick ’em up at the always awesome Otherist store [Leliegracht 6, 1015DE, Amsterdam]

I’m thrilled to have some of my work represented by Etsy (thanks, Etsy!) at Dutch Design Week, which starts in Eindhoven today (22 October) and runs until 30 October 2011.

I’m up to my eyeballs in work at the moment so won’t be able to make the trip to attend any of the exhibitions or events, but if you’re near Eindhoven in the next week pop along to DDW – it looks like there will be a lot of good stuff happening. Here’s a taster…

from top to bottom:

> Haak Aan! (‘Get Hooked’ urban knitting/yarn bombing exhibit)
> *SMD – Living Data (graphic design)

> Anne Varekamp (“CupCakeCup”, ceramics)
> Architecture.ehv (graduate work from TU/e‘s Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning)

> Duurzaam en Ecologisch Viltwerk (ecologically sustainable/animal friendly feltwork by Beatrice Waanders)
> Tim van Cromvoirt ‘Thermophores’ (work by recent graduates from The Academy of Art & Design, AKV|St.Joost University of Applied Sciences)

Series 2, No.6 [Brittle Star]

My ‘Wonders from a Cabinet of Curiosities’ series (or “witch’s pantry” as a friend told me her picture framer called it! ;) continues to grow. New creatures printed during my recent printmaking session include a squid, a salamander, a nautilus, sea anemones and a brittle star. They’re all available as limited edition silkscreen prints in my shop now.

Series 3 – No.1 [Nautilus] and No.3 [Salamander]
(with a much-loved and well-thumbed copy of Albertus Seba’s
epic 18th Century tome ‘Cabinet of Natural Curiosities’

For those of you who expressed an interest in seeing the colour print I alluded to in my previous post… thanks!, and I hope to blog about it soon (just need to make a few more inroads into the client deadlines that are looming before I get there).
I can tell you it involves more creatures (surprise surprise!)… not bottled this time, but still very much in grave danger.

While in the printmaking studio a few weeks ago working on this project, I also took the opportunity to start printing the creatures that make up my second series of ‘Wonders from a Cabinet of Curiosities’. All was going swimmingly and I’d managed to successfully print most of them until, on a particularly sweltering hot day, my ink repeatedly took on the consistency* of a bucket of Hammer Horror prop blood and I ruined sheet after sheet of beautiful 400gsm watercolour paper pulling one terrible, sticky print after another.

After multiple failed attempts I decided to cut my losses and wait for cooler weather, but unfortunately not before I’d used up most of the aforementioned beautiful paper! I need to restock (it’s not as easy to come by as I’d thought) before completing the series – in the meantime these five critters have wriggled and squiggled their way into my shop

* If any of you seasoned screenprinters out there have any tips on ‘stabilising’ ink consistency over an extended period of time in a high heat environment (never thought I’d be calling Amsterdam that!) I’d love to hear them…

Remember these critters? Well, way back at the beginning of this year I spent a couple of days at the wonderful Amsterdams Grafisch Atelier (AGA) and made a limited edition screenprint of them. After a nine month gestation period (I’m not sure what they’ve been up to for the past nine months in the dark seclusion of their A1 storage box!) they have finally found their way into the world, and more specifically in to my brand-spanking-new etsy shop.

Also available in the shop are little packs of handmade ‘Greeting Cards from a Cabinet of Curiosities’… for when flowers just won’t do, and the only way to say it is with creatures preserved in bottles :)

The AGA is a fully equipped printmaking studio in the centre of Amsterdam, which I am very happy to have found and very grateful to have access to since completing a screenprinting course/workshop there towards the end of last year. The workshop was very informative and a lot of fun, and the studio spaces are fantastic! These two ‘Curiosity Cabinet’ projects are the only things I have printed there since completing the workshop so I am very much hoping to get back to the AGA soon for more printing fun and experimentation… it has been too long!
