Jan Baptist Bonnecroy (1618 – c.1665), ‘Gezicht op Brussel / View of Brussels’

After taking in some of the art on Brussels’ streets we headed to the Koninklijke Musea voor Schone Kunsten in search of Bruegels and Boschs. Much to our contentment we found both, as well as…

cool, dappled woods

decadent things to eat

mighty battles

red squirrels!

beautiful weeds, abundant bouquets

zombies and alien skulls

bodies…

… writhing …

… in agony

the writhing (and the agony) over

and owls presiding over impenetrable goings-on

Attached to the Koninklijke Musea voor Schone Kunsten is the Magritte Museum, which we also visited but in which photography is not permitted. It houses a wonderful collection of Magritte’s paintings as well as fascinating ephemera in the form of photographs, letters, exhibition invitations & catalogues, and some of his commercial design work. Well worth a visit for your bowler-hatconfounding twilight-and-pipes-that-are-not-pipes fix.

Dirty Three @ Ancienne Belgique, 6 June 2012

Last week we hopped on a train, Brussels bound, to catch the Dirty Three in concert (supported by David Pajo playing selections from ‘Live from a Shark Cage’ – nice!). We also made a bit of time to wander the streets of Brussels (‘spiritual’ home of the comic strip/book!) and take in some of its street art…

A post in honour of this little fella, who would have been celebrating his 6th birthday today. We still – and always will – sorely miss the tummy-tickles and all the good times we shared together. The new Zeits MOCAA (Museum of Contemporary Art Africa) building in Cape Town is an extraordinary architectural intervention/renovation (by Heatherwick Studio) of a decommissioned 1920’s grain silo complex. I particularly like the many-paned windows, which bring to mind the compound eyes of insects, and offer wonderful multifaceted views over the city and its iconic mountains. - #zeitsmocaa #contemporaryart #museum #capetown #architecture #heatherwickstudio #tablemountain #devilspeak #southafrica #africa #window #multifaceted #pattern #blue -
