I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again: one of the (many) things I find so appealing about Barcelona is its duality, the way it embodies old and new and (seemingly) seamlessly embraces ‘ugliness’ and ‘beauty’ (I realise these things are entirely subjective!). There’s an urban grittiness & an ancient, peeling, forgotten quality to many of the building facades and narrow side-streets. But there’s also a pervasive spirit of invention, imagination & an irrepressible beauty to be found at every turn. (I expect all cities possess this duality to some degree, but none with quite the same finesse as Barcelona! :)
