I think they’re wrapped around their drainpipe/fire hydrant/whatever and a seam is then stitched in situ… but I’ve never actually caught anyone in the act of yarn-bombing so don’t know for sure ;)
I agree, the dustbin is great! (Must get a batch of eye stickers printed one of these days… :)
