There’s something exhilarating about journeying by train. As the landscape, the trees, the houses and industry, the tangle of tracks and wires, the sheep in their pastures, whip past beyond the window’s pane, there’s a promise of adventure (I find this holds true regardless of how mundane the journey’s actual purpose might be). And for reasons I don’t fully understand (perhaps it’s the fleeting nature of the world flying by, just beyond reach) the journeying is almost always tinged with a serene melancholy – particularly so on a frosty winter’s morning, the world ‘out there’ shrouded in a soft mist…
