Although we thought we might be too early for the blossoms (after a particularly harsh and prolonged winter) we were not disappointed when we rode down to the cherry blossom grove in Het Amsterdamse Bos last Saturday (it’s becoming an annual tradition :). While not yet at their most ‘flamboyant’ they were still breathtakingly beautiful (perhaps more so for their simple ‘minimalism’?).

Lying on one’s back in the long grass, bathed in the first really warm sun of spring, gazing up at a deep blue sky and gentle sakura is nothing short of perfect.
I couldn’t help thinking what beautiful fabric designs could be inspired by views of cherry blossom from below. With eyes half closed against the bright sunlight striking abstract patterns emerge, and I love the contrast between the translucent delicacy of the blossoms and the strong graphic quality of the fine branches and twigs. All on a backdrop of perfect blue…
